Animal Health and Welfare Specialist

Job Summary

The Animal Health and Welfare Specialist is responsible for monitoring for and ensuring that all bird health and welfare activities are properly carried out at Trillium Farms locations. This position works closely with the Compliance Administrator, other members of the Compliance Team, Production and Pullet Managers, as well as Bird Service Crews.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Schedules and conducts/coordinates the completion of all environmental and serological sampling for Trillium flocks according to the Trillium Farms Animal Health and Welfare Plan.
  • Ensures all samples are properly submitted to the designated laboratories in a timely manner.
  • Performs Bi-monthly Farm Internal audits for all Layer and Pullet facilities and follows-up on/verifies the completion of corrective actions resulting from these audits
  • Conducts evaluations of barns post clean-out and prior to re-populating to ensure barns are in sufficient condition for birds
  • Acts as Animal Welfare Officer in regards to ensuring all activities are properly completed at the sites in accordance with Trillium Animal Welfare programs.
    • Leads any audits and handles all reporting related to these programs
  • Carries out orientation and annual refresher training for animal welfare and biosecurity for all applicable employees
  • Monitors facilities for compliance as it pertains to SE Prevention Plan, Biosecurity Plan, Animal Health and Welfare Plans, etc.
  • Monitors and tracks all bird movements as well as collects, reviews and files all flock records/paperwork
    • Documents flock summary reports for all pullet and layer flocks
  • Assists Compliance team in carrying out all team tasks as necessary
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or commensurate experience
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards related to Animal Health and Welfare preferred
  • Prior experience in laboratory testing, swabbing and blood pulling preferred
  • Must be able to communicate in the English language. Bilingual preferred
  • Able to work in various climate conditions including extreme heat and cold environments, walking, standing and sitting for long periods of time
  • Competent in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Must be able to work some nights, weekends and holidays as required
